I have read a lot of memoirs in the past 6 months. A lot. And I have a few more to go. I listened to this book (read by the author) at a time when I had jumped from memoir to memoir quite quickly, so unfortunately, my review of it is very much a comparison to the others. It might turn out to be unfair, but this is how I felt reading it.
I adore Lauren Graham. I love Lorelai Gilmore. I love Gilmore Girls (though I have very strong feelings about the revival). I thought this book was ok. I didn't dislike it, I didn't hate it, but I also didn't love it. For the most part, I felt that she did not have much to share. The book felt a little surface-level. There was not a whole lot of depth to it.
Her childhood: skipping Kindergarten, living in Japan and Hawaii and on a houseboat, could have been a whole lot more interesting than it was portrayed in the book. The one chapter that I felt was really soul-baring was the one in which she shared an early audition experience and its emotional impact on her.
The book was cute and sweet and funny at times, but it was not inspiring. I did not learn about myself through reading it, and I don't feel that I learned all that much about Graham. It is a nice read and if you want to learn what she thought of each season of Gilmore Girls because you are a hardcore lover of the show, it's worth checking that chapter out. I
