For me, this book was a revelation and a pleasant surprise. Going into it I didn't know much about Schumer. I had watched a lot of her late night interviews and loved them, hadn't seen much of her show at all, and had never successfully made it through her standup special. I really did not know what to expect, but I didn't expect this.
Schumer obviously took this project very seriously. She was honest and open and bared her soul to the reader, which readers will always notice and appreciate. She shared the good, the bad, the ugly, and the hilarious. The book is extremely introspective and reflects the intelligence of the writer. She filled it with deep and emotional chapters peppered with hilarious lists, stories, and jokes. Listening to the audiobook, which was read by her, was a great choice. She reads it aloud the way she means for it to be read and the sarcasm in the book comes across well.
I've always had trouble enjoying comics that spend large portions of their stand up in graphic and overdone sex jokes. Louis CK is another comic that I love but cannot enjoy his standup. This book wasn't like that. Everything had a purpose and a journey of self-discovery. Schumer shares stories of abuse, assault, privilege, sexism, and diarrhea in the book that I think all young girls can learn from. Personally, I learned a lot about accepting myself and saying "Fuck you" to all the people who don't think that I should.
