Book Struggles

Here is a list of books I have abandoned so far in 2016:

- After Alice by Gregory MacGuire

- The High Mountains of Portugal by Yann Matel

- Pride & Prejudice and Zombies

- Parable of the Sower

- Gone Girl

It took me YEARS to discover that it was not blasphemous to abandon a book, but it still feels so wrong when I do. I feel terrible when I struggle through a book. Sometimes it's a matter of taste. Sometimes it's bad writing or slow plot. Sometimes it's an issue with punctuation (I won't lie, this happens more often that I care to admit).

I'm currently attempting to get through Hemlock Grove, this month's book club book. It's a trial. I have tried everything to speed through it, but I can't! It doesn't have commas in the correct places which forces me to read a sentence three different times before I figure out what it is trying to say.

Frankly, it's also not my type of book. That's the point of our book club. We're trying to get ourselves to read books that are out of the ordinary for us, but maybe there's a reason I don't read these weird, obscene books. I always feel like they're trying to be mysterious and shocking rather than tell a story. I hate a book that tries to hard.

Anyways, here's hoping I finish it before our meeting this week. Because, if not, I will have finished 0 books in November. Sad face.
