I was instantly drawn to this book. Not only does it have an appealing cover, but the premise is something that I'm very familiar with. Back in high school I wrote a short story with a similar one. It is about a girl who has recurring dreams about the same guy as they go on various adventures and eventually she falls in love with him. The problem is that she now prefers her daydreams to people in her life, until she suddenly meets this guy and things go terribly wrong. This short story was actually written as a kind of therapy for me because I was having recurring dreams about the same person and was beginning to prefer those dreams to reality. In my story I basically debunked the dream guy and made it so she could move on with her life. I suppose I needed to as well.
Anyway, you can see how I would've been excited to read a book with a very similar premise. This book did not disappoint. It is told from the perspective of Alice Rowe, an imaginative teenager who moves to a new school and is shocked to meet her lifelong dream bestfriend/boyfriend, Max, in real life. The thing about real life, though, is that it's never quite as good and easy as dreams.
I enjoyed the book. I felt the emotions (silly, sad, and romantic) Alice felt without feeling they were over the top for teenagers. The dream sequences were far better than any I've written and the format of the book made it very easy to read. I will definitely be on the lookout for other Lucy Keating books considering how comfortable this was to read.
If you've read many of my reviews, you'll notice that I'm always drawn to the way best friends are written. I guess I'm just looking for my next book best friend, and the combo of Sophie and Oliver in this book made me very very happy.
5 stars. Read it, it's cute.
