I'm serial-writing these reviews and I'm sorry if some of the plot from books #2 and #3 are blending together! It's just very good! I'll reiterate some of my previous comments...

Mafi's prose. Her writing style is delicious. It's gorgeous. When reading book 1 it took some getting used to, but the metaphor, imagery, poetry of the writing just leaps off the page now. It's entirely unique and I can't help but wonder about the brilliant mind that painted these pictures with words.

In book #2 of this series you've taken the broken girl out of her lifetime of hostage situations. As a hostage of her parents, the mental institution, Warner, and herself. Now Juliette must make her own way and decide who she is. And she's expected to accept and learn to love this horrible curse that has overshadowed her entire life. Not only that, but things aren't going as well as they could with the man that she loves.

Second books are interesting. They introduce new characters, expand the world, and create a lot of room for character development. Most of the time, they do all this without really blowing you away. In the first half of the book I was about ready to give up on Juliette. I was tired of her hysterics and, though I empathized with her self-pity, it killed me to see her fall apart over and over. By the end of the book though, I'd seen her beginning to grow and come into her own.

The romance angle of the story also took some turn in this book. Some for the better and some for the worse. I'll let you judge. I'll tell you what #team I'm on in my review for book 3 so I don't ruin anything for you.

I'm still loving this series, but some of the crying-holding-onto-each-other-breathing-heavy-in-the-hallway was just bugging me, which is why it's got 4 stars.
