"Friendship ... is born at the moment when one man says to another "What! You too? I thought that no one but myself” ― C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

Last summer, I stumbled onto a few fortunate tags and found myself falling into something called Bookstagram. 'What's bookstagram?' you ask. Well, it's the name given to the community of book lovers, bibliophiles, booknerds who have made a home on Instagram. They share their unabashed, unironic love of all things books (and their photgraphy skills) with the world.

To be fair, I'm very very far from a Bookstagram celebrity. This week I hit 50 followers, but it hasn't detracted a bit from my enjoyment of what instagram has to offer for book lovers.

Here are 10 things that we can all love about the book community on Instagram:

10. Gorgeous - see?

9. Merchandise - for all that extra money that's lying around...

This marauders mug is from @bookwormboutique's society 6 store

8. Friends - a really sweet bunch of people with similar interests

7. Tags - a creative way to take new pictures and try new things

6. Connection - you find your way to new websites, blogs, and stores devoted to things that you love

There are all kinds of Society6 stores with great book merch

I didn't know about bookdepository (free shipping)

5. Authors - I wouldn't have known about or had the confidence to attend signings if I didn't see all the fun pictures of other people doing it. Lots of YA authors have instagram accounts and will like, comment, or post their pictures which makes you feel closer to the people who fill your free time

Here you can see that P.Brown used my picture of his signing and tagged my personal account in the comment. Yay!

4. Giveaways - not that I've won anything, but there's always that chance!

3. Recommendations - most of the new books I read in 2015 I had seen on Instagram, it's how I discovered Rainbow Rowell

2. Inspiration - I mean really? beautiful shelves, organization, trinkets. I even got my gift idea for my new niece/nephew from instagram

1. Community - there are people out there who also spend their free time looking at and liking pictures of books and are happy to be out there as total nerds and share that love with others. That's a beautiful thing.
