I'm going to be completely honest here. I haven't gotten through this entire series. I've been borrowing them from the library (Overdrive) and I haven't quite gotten sucked in enough to finish one before the rental runs out, at which point I have to wait until it's my turn again.
At the same time, I don't want this to reflect badly on the books. The concept is there and there is an interesting element of "new" here which is hard to find these days, however, the story itself only sucks me in for a few chapters at a time. I believe that this may be, in part, due to the fact that I'm far more interested in the villains (aka historical figures) than the teenage twin protagonists.
me: I understand that they're trying to bring destruction down on the earth and that you're also in a lot of pain, but what do you think Nicolo Machievelli is doing right now?
See how that gets in the way of the story? There's also a little bit of an American-Gods-for-kids vibe which is jarring. I think I'd recommend this series to my students or other kids. It has a creative element that will spark their imaginations, but it simply didn't capture mine.
Maybe I'll get this series finished one day and edit.. who knows?
