I had an incredible time at Comic Con this year. This was in large part due to my commitment to an uncharacteristic flexibility that was embodied in the weekend's motto: FOLLOW THE FUN. Here are my 10 tips on how to do the same...

10. Dress the Part
Whether you decide to go in costume or not, make sure you are dressed as comfortably as possible. I brought 2 pairs of comfy walking shoes and switched off each day so that I could avoid any blisters. I also brought a light jacket that served as jacket, belt, blanket, pillow, and at one point the handle to my broken suitcase.
9. Do your research
There are plenty of sites and blogs out there dedicated to preparing you for the perfect con. Read them, bookmark them, revisit them, and when all is said and done, thank the blogger for helping you through. Here are 2 that really saved me: The Nerdy Girlie and Unofficial SDCC Blog
8. Plan ahead
How many days will you attend? Hotel or no? How will you get there? There are many things that need to be planned for and completed months before the actual convention. Know the dates because you don't want to miss them.
7. Make lists
We all knew this would be on here. A month prior to SDCC I found a google spreadsheet that a generous person shared to help you prepare for your SDCC. It was complete with lists of clothing, items to pack, events to attend, and budgets. It never hurts to plan.
6. Connect
Social media is your friend here. Follow your favorite celebs and set up alerts so you know where they'll be. Download apps for all of your favorite companies/networks because they'll be announcing free stuff and signings.
5. Connect!
Don't forget to look up from that phone and take a look around. You're surrounded by tens of thousands of giant nerds and it's glorious. Smile, say hi, and commiserate with your fellow line-waiters.
4. Prioritize your money
I promised myself months ago that I would spend more money on experiences than materials and that held up surprisingly well. The amazing free swag made for great gifts and souvenirs and all of those great meals rarely cost more than $15 per person. Despite what people say, SDCC can be done on a budget.
3. Be prepared
Bring a couple of healthy snacks and some portable chargers. You'll thank me later.
2. Branch out
Outside the convention center, there are plenty of happenings in nearby hotels and parks. There are also unrelated free events such as the Nerdist Conival at Petco park with games and free swag. There is also the Nerd Machine's Nerd HQ which gives fans a more intimate experience with celebs through panels, signings, and pictures all for a great cause!
1. Follow the fun
Don't stress. For every event that you attend there are a dozen more that you miss. I missed plenty of things I would've loved, but at the end of the day I had an incredible time and I wouldn't trade it. Don’t be afraid to split up with friends if you have different tastes or want to wait in lines and maximize your chances. Just have fun.
