I have a confession to make: I read the occasional romance novel. It used to be a guilty pleasure that I tried not to tell people. Now, I'm unashamed. I read romance novels. They're wonderful for a light-hearted quick read. If you're feeling down they're a great pick-me-up. If you want to read something in a day or less.
Now, I'm not an expert. Frankly, I've only read books by two or three authors and they're all British historical romances. I can't bring myself to read a contemporary romance. Whether you believe me or not, I read them for the banter and the characters. They're not great literature. They tend to follow a formula and there aren't a lot of differences between them. Because of their simple structure and limited scope, they actually get a lot of character development. If you want to learn how to create palpable tension or have a reader laughing out loud, read a romance novel to learn how it's done.
The book I just finished is part of a series by Lisa Kleypas called the Wallflowers. I've read it before and every so often I like to revisit it. I LOVE the characters and the banter always leaves me giggling. Seriously, give it a shot.
