“Man cannot be freed by the same injustice that enslaved it.” - Pierce Brown, Red Rising

Recently I came across a Tumblr post on Pinterest that really spoke to me:
"Sometimes I get ‘readers-block’, like I can’t read anything to save my life, I’ll start 10 books and stop each after seven pages because all I’ll want is to already have read that book and not actually read it and I won’t be able to focus at all and it pains me so much." - Cumberbatchin
This had been such a struggle for me for the past few weeks. i started and put down so many books. I even went back to some of my usual authors and couldn't get into anything. it was very upsetting. Then a friend recommended this series and I was right back to my old self. (which is good because what else was I to do on a 5-day snow-imposed weekend)
It's been a while since I stayed up all night reading a book because I couldn't put it down. This was the case with BOTH books in this series by Pierce Brown. The writing, the characters, the plot, everything sucks you in and you can't put it down. When telling my friends about it I said it's Brave New World + Hunger Games + Ender's Game + something new. (It even references Ender's Game which I geeked out about).
The main character isn't whiny or irritating, which tends to be the case with Young Adult distopian stories. He's accepted his fate is not to have a normal life and his higher purpose guides his actions. It's really refreshing actually. I also saw a lot of parallels between the society set up in these books and many of the current events we're seeing today.. I love a book that makes you think.
Now, as a good person I have to warn you, the third book in this series doesn't come out until next year and Golden Son ends with one hell of a cliffhanger, but it's worth a read (or two).
