"I have written you down now, you will live forever. And all the world will read you and you will live forever. In eyes not yet created, on tongues that are not born, I have written you down now you will live forever." - Bastille (Poet)

Lake Elkhorn in Winter

It may come as a shock considering the medium I'm using to relay this, but I'm not much of a writer. I enjoy writing and often I get up in the middle of the night to scribble furiously. I even sometimes dream that I might finish a story and become a published author. The only problem with all of this is that I never share my writing. I don't let anyone read it or see it or even know that I write in the first place.

I want to change that. I want to be more confident in my own thoughts and my words. So, as a first step, I will share some of it here. It's an easy first step since I've never shared this blog with anyone I know.

Maybe I'm thinking of my students, but lately I've been waking up with some children's poetry stuck in my head. Maybe I'll have them all write poems about characteristics of an great person in honor of MLK Jr. Day.

Be Kind

"Be kind," she said.

"What kind?" I asked.

"The kind who always answers when called,

The kind who helps without being told.

The kind who smiles at young and at old,

The kind who reaches out with a hand to hold.

The kind who gives and doesn't remember

The kind who takes and never forgets.

The kind who's jolly not just in December,

The kind who's warm not only in July.

The kind who could never harm another,

Not a person, not an animal, not even a fly.

Be that kind."
