El Yunque National Rainforest
While planning our little trip to Puerto Rico, the think I looked forward to most (and main reason for booking a vacation) was the beach. I set aside an entire day of our 3 day trip for lounging at the beach, snorkeling with turtles, and getting really tan. You can imagine my disappointment when the one freak storm of the season hit on the day we planned to do this. I say "freak storm" because every guide book and local told us that it almost never rained on this island at this time of year.
At first I was heartbroken, then I accepted that we would not in fact be reading on the sand, snorkeling, or doing any beach activities on this vacation. While we stiil went ahead with visiting an island that contains some of the best beaches in the world, there wasn't much to do but feel the warm water on our toes and walk the beach for a while. We met some fellow travelers who were similarly thwarted, laughed, and left. Of course, when people see me returning even paler than when I left for Puerto Rico, I'll feel that same twinge of disappointment and regret, but only for a moment, because I won't let this little bump ruin an amazing trip to an incredible place.
